What is the salutogenic process?


The salutogenic process is a concept that emphasises promoting and maintaining emotional resilience and overall well-being. Unlike the traditional disease-focused approach, which seeks to identify and treat specific causes of emotional distress, it prioritises proactive measures to cultivate and sustain strong emotional health. 


In emotional resilience, this empowers individuals to develop coping mechanisms, build psychological strength, and navigate life's challenges effectively. Focusing on the factors contributing to emotional well-being rather than addressing problems as they arise offers a holistic framework for promoting long-term emotional health and resilience.


This technique challenges us to ask not just what causes emotional distress but also what promotes emotional thriving. It invites us to explore the factors contributing to our emotional resilience, empowering us to take charge of our mental health and navigate life's ups and downs with greater strength and clarity. This proactive approach encourages us to rethink how we nurture our mental health and resilience:


  1. What if we shifted our focus from merely surviving to actively thriving? The salutogenic process challenges the conventional notion of emotional health by asking us to strive not just for the absence of distress but for the presence of flourishing.
